Some soldiers and some terrain.

Got the first enemy group for Five Parsecs From Home painted up, and a little terrain in the works.
The original plan was to do the not-space orks, but I got half way through and decided I hated the paintjob on them so changed tracks to the Generic Soldier Types to avoid ramming my head into the wall on the orks. The minis are Neu Swabian League from Ground Zero Games.

Primed black, heavy dry brush with a Wizard Grey (2 Thin Coats), trying to hit the panels while keeping the black recesses. Hit it with a Nuln wash (GW), and went back over with another drybrush of Wizard Grey following with a lighter drybrush of Carcharodon Grey (2TC). The weapons were done in a basic silver (Dark Steel from Vallejo Mecha Colour was the first one I picked up) with a black wash and a little silver touch up. Shoulder and weapon details were an Ultramarine Blue (Army Painter Warpaints) just to add a splash of colour and break up the grey. Helmet visors were just a Retributor Armour (GW), with the two white helmets just being a quick coat of Matt White. The bases were a quick slathering of spackle/ wall grout, a warm brown coat to cover the white and then some moss green flock. I was a little worried the blues and greys would be too subdued at the small scale, in my experience 15mm lends itself well to brighter colours, but getting them to a green base instead of the spray matt black bases really helped.

This gives me 8 grunts, along with the LMG and Rocket guys to stand in as specialists and possible eventual Veteran (from the 5PFH compendium optional rules. Basically a single regular grunt with +1 Combat) The white helmet riflemen will likely stand in as the Lieutenant.

I also threw together some quick scatter which I was sorely lacking. 8mm Craft cubes from ebay, about £2 for a pack of 25. Didn't go AS fare as I would have hoped, but for the now they'll do. Of two minds to grab some more cubes and do more cardboard stacks, or just get other stuff and diversify the terrain.

The cubes were just primed black, with a zandri dust (GW) heavy dry brush, a coat of Agrax (GW) followed by another drybrush of Zandri. Still felt a bit dark, so I mixed in some white with the Zandri and did another lighter drybrush.

The markings were done in pen. Biro for the arrows and top "stickers" as I couldn't find my fancy Sakura Micron Pen, but by the time I found it all I had left to do was throw on a few cheeky logos here and there. Tried doing a little white label on one with another art pen (Posca) but I'm not sure how much I like it.

Finally, surprise bit of terrain I'm working on. See if you can guess what its meant to be!

My crew minis should arrive next week, Alternative Armies website say they're getting back at it on the 8th so fingers crossed.

  1. I enjoyed 5 Parsecs from Home. I played a short solo campaign to see if the system would work for my larger weekly gaming group. In the end, I decided we had too many players to work well. I had fun on my test drive, though, and look forward to reading about your crew's adventures!
